EGST Scholarship Policy

The Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology (EGST) sometimes has access to sources of scholarship funds through various organisations. See Part II of this document for a description of the types of scholarship assistance which EGST may have available. When available, scholarship funds will be applied for and (if successful) distributed according to the following policies:

1. EGST administers both partial scholarships (covering full or partial tuition, fees and/or book allowance) and full scholarships (covering tuition, fees, book allowance and a stipend toward living expenses).

2. Subject to any conditions made by donors, scholarship funds may be used for both part-time and full-time students.

3. All scholarships handled by EGST are subject to a 10% administrative fee.

4. EGST is not responsible for scholarship funds received for EGST students by any other body, for example by MYS, ETC, EKHC, EECMY, ECFE, etc.

5. In awarding scholarships, the needs of students from the three EGST owners will be given priority.

6. Full-time students will be given priority over part-time students in the allocation of scholarships.

7. An EGST Scholarship Application form is available from the Registrar’s Office but is given only to those students who have been accepted and are registered as EGST students.

8. Students wishing to receive a scholarship for a particular academic year must first complete the EGST Scholarship Application form. After the EGST Scholarship Committee has screened scholarship applicants, the selected students may be given an additional scholarship application form provided by a supporting agency, to be sent to the donors. It is the student’s responsibility to complete all required forms in a timely manner and to supply the Registrar with all information required by partners.

9. Selection criteria for scholarship recipients include:

    1. a. commitment to Christian life and ministry;
    1. b. genuine financial need verified by evidence;
    1. c. commitment to academic achievement;
    1. d. excellence of character;
               e. other criteria as required by specific partners.

10. Funds designated for individual students may not be transferred to another student without the written permission of the funding partner or individual donor.

11. Any balance of EGST scholarship funds allocated will not be distributed in cash.

12. Scholarship recipients must keep a minimum GPA of 3.0.

13. Scholarship recipients must be committed to complete their studies within the time-limit of their programme of study.

14. Scholarship recipients must agree to report to partners if required.

15. Any scholarship recipient wishing to withdraw from EGST, or unable to keep the requirements in points 12, 13 and 14 above, must inform the EGST administration and will forfeit his/her scholarship assistance.

16. If a scholarship recipient withdraws from EGST, attains a GPA lower than 3.0, or fails to qualify for school enrolment for any reason, funds designated for that student can be transferred to another qualified student after agreement with the funding partner.

17. Once a student has dropped out of the student scholarship programme, he/she cannot normally be readmitted or re-apply to the programme. The EGST Scholarship Committee will consider any exceptions due to unusual circumstances. In such cases, students requesting re-admission into the scholarship programme must submit a new EGST Scholarship Application form and a letter explaining the unusual circumstances.

A. Individual Scholarships

Some EGST students receive individual scholarships from their sponsoring bodies or other sources. Although these scholarships may be administered through EGST, they are not solicited by EGST and students need not apply for such scholarships through EGST. Individual students must arrange individual scholarships, though EGST will provide supporting documentation as required. Individual scholarships tend to be the most generous of the scholarships, and students are encouraged to seek such scholarship assistance from their sponsoring bodies before applying for a scholarship through EGST.
In the absence of an individual scholarship, students may apply for scholarships through EGST. See the EGST Registrar for more details concerning the selection criteria and application procedures for of the following.

B. Designated Scholarships

Designated scholarships are received for students in specific programmes or, in the case of some partners, for students whose names and credentials have been given in advance.
C. Undesignated Scholarships
EGST receives undesignated funds for scholarships for students from various sources. In addition to the policies stated above, the following criteria and principles will govern the allocation of these funds.

1. Clear demonstration of need (by means of the EGST Scholarship Application form).

2. Students will not normally be eligible for scholarship assistance in their first semester of study.

3. These funds will not only be allocated for tuition expenses but may also be allocated for fees and/or course materials for full-time students. No allocations will be made for living expenses.
